Surrendering a Cat

We understand that surrendering a beloved pet is never an easy decision. Every situation is unique, and we know this choice often comes with a great deal of emotion. At Lucky Penny Kitties, our goal is to ensure that every cat is safe, cared for, and given the opportunity to find a loving forever home.

As a foster-based rescue, we have limited space and can only accept owner surrenders when foster homes or openings are available. Please note that intake is not guaranteed, as we are often at full capacity due to the overwhelming number of cats and kittens in need of assistance.

If we are unable to accept your cat immediately, we will do our best to place you on our waiting list and contact you as soon as space becomes available.

Please Read: We Are Often at Full Capacity

Lucky Penny Kitties is a 100% volunteer-run, foster-based rescue — we have no shelter or physical facility of our own. Every cat in our care lives in the home of a volunteer foster, which means our space is directly limited by how many foster homes we have available at any given moment. That number changes constantly, and there are many times when we simply have no openings at all.

We wish, more than anything, that we could say yes to every cat who needs us. We can't. There are far more cats in our community than we currently have the volunteers, foster homes, and resources to help, and we never want to make promises we can't keep. If we are unable to accept your cat right away, please know it is never a reflection of how much we care — it's a reflection of our very real limits as a small, all-volunteer organization doing our best with what we have.

When we're at capacity, we will do everything we can to offer guidance, resources, or a spot on our waiting list rather than leave you without options. We are so grateful for your patience and understanding as we work as hard as we possibly can to help as many cats as we can, one at a time.

Please also understand that we are not an emergency service. As an all-volunteer team, we do not staff a phone line or monitor messages 24/7. We strive to respond to every request as quickly as we possibly can, but please be patient with us as we balance this work alongside our jobs, families, and the cats already in our care.

Surrender Fee

A $25 surrender fee per cat is required upon intake. This fee helps offset the initial costs of care, including food, litter, veterinary services, vaccinations, and other essential supplies, allowing us to continue helping as many animals as possible.

How to Request a Surrender

To begin the surrender process, please complete our Surrender Request Form.

When submitting your request, please include as much information as possible, such as recent photos, age, personality and temperament, medical history, and any special needs or behavioral concerns. The more information you provide, the better we can determine the most appropriate placement and timeline for your cat.

What Happens Next?

If an opening is available, a member of our team will contact you to schedule an intake appointment.

If we are currently at capacity — which, as a small, all-volunteer rescue, happens more often than we'd like — your request will be added to our waiting list, and we will reach out as soon as a foster home or space opens up. We want to help every cat who needs us, and even when we aren't able to say yes right away, we won't leave you without options.

At Lucky Penny Kitties, we believe that asking for help is an act of love. We will never judge your circumstances. Our mission is to support both animals and the people who care for them while working together to find the best possible outcome for every cat.

Thank you for trusting Lucky Penny Kitties with the care and future of your feline companion. ❤️🐾
